ZHANG ZHUANG  THE CHI KUNG TREE POSTURES

1. Wuchi Posture
Wu Chi Posture

WU CHI POSITION: Stand knees bent,

hands hanging on the side of the body,

palms facing the thighs and about

2 inches away from the thighs.

The elbows should be out as if

there are two balloons under each armpit.

Hold the position for 2 minutes.

This position is the beginning posture

and gets you ready for the sets of movements.

2. Holding The Balloon
Holding The Balloon

HOLDING THE BALLOON: From the Wu Chi position,

breathe in and slowly

raise your arms forming an open circle,

with the palms facing your chest.

Continue to breathe naturally.

Imagine that your elbows are

resting on small balloons

and that you are sitting on a big balloon.

Hold the position for 2 minutes.

This posture helps you accelerate

the flow of Chi through the feet, up the entire body

and to the hands and head.

This posture together with shaking the body

is used to treat skeletal problems like minor back pain.

The same combination when practised everyday

also stops further development of arthritis.

This posture is also used for self treatment of constipation.

It is also beneficial when practised with

supporting the Sky with Both hands

Holding Up a Single Hand, and Shaking The Body

for short term treatment of Asthma.

The above mentioned set of movements are from the

8 Strand of Brocade exercise.

3. Holding The Balloon In Front of Your Face
Holding The Balloon In front Of Your Face

HOLDING THE BALLOON IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE POSITION: From the second position,

lower your arms to the sides, leaving the knees bent.

Breathe in and lift your arms,

palms out such that the back of your hands are at face level.

Breathe naturally and hold the posture for two minutes

This posture is regarded as the most demanding,

on the leg and arm muscles

& therefore needs a higher level of tolerance.

This position greatly increases

the flow of energy in the body, and thus,

when combined with Looking Back Like a Cow,

Touching The Feet with Both handsthey are

used to treat low blood pressure

4. Standing In The Stream
Standing In The Stream

STANDING IN THE STREAM POSITION: From the third position

lower your arms to the sides leaving the knees bent.

Breathe in and slowly raise your arms to waist level, palms facing up.

Continue to breathe naturally and extend each arm to either side,

turning the palms face down.

Imagine that each palm is resting on a big balloon.

The elbows should be out as if

there are two balloons under each armpit.

Hold the position for 2 minutes.

This posture further builds on endurance and strength.

5. Holding The Belly
Holding The Belly

HOLDING THE BELLY POSITION: From the previous

position, gently lower the arms

Breathe in and bring the forearms

round to the front, palms facing you,

as if you are holding a small balloon against your stomach,

just below the navel. The elbows should be slightly out.

Hold the position for 2 minutes.

This position combined with Ni>Holding Up a single hand

and Looking Back Like a Cow

is used to treat those who suffer from high blod pressure.

when combined with Holding a Balloon and Shaking the Body,

THE COOLING DOWN EXERCISES

Put your hands on your hips and turn

the waist clockwise and anti-clockwise

for half a minute each way.

Go into a wider stance (horse-riding stance),

(Note: tighten your bowel muscles throughout this exercise)

form loose fists and rise both arms down from the side, flinging open

your hands as they reach the centre, fingers pointing down, breathing out as you do so.

Now raise the fists to the right side and repeat the cycle 30 times.
